Police arrest three people on drug trafficking charges

Authorities have arrested three people in Roque Bluffs on prescription drug trafficking and possession charges.

Deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s office executed a search warrant Wednesday at a residence.

They arrested the homeowner, 47-year-old Randy Preston, on charges of trafficking oxycodone and cultivation of marijuana. Authorities said they found 34 plants.

Others arrested were 50-year-old Steven Barnard of Marshfield on an aggravated trafficking of oxycodone charge, and 30-year-old Dawn Crocker of Roque Bluffs on charges of furnishing of oxycodone and possession.

Officials warn residents of fraudulent phone call

Police are warning area residents about a fraudulent automated telephone call that attempts to get people’s personal banking information.

Public safety dispatchers for Cumberland County reported getting numerous calls from residents who’ve received the fraudulent call.

The call that purports to be from Gorham Savings Bank tells people their bank account has been frozen and they should enter their account number to fix the problem.

Dispatchers contacted Gorham Savings Bank and learned that the calls are not affiliated with the bank.

They warn residents against giving any personal account information over the telephone.

Shutdown idles 44 workers at state agency, LePage says

Maine Gov. Paul LePage says 44 federally funded employees of the Maine Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management are being temporarily laid off because of the government shutdown.

LePage said Thursday that the department is the hardest hit state agency so far by the shutdown.

He says unless a resolution is reached to end the shutdown, the state will have to figure out how to proceed with other state employees or programs that are partially or fully funded by the federal government.

Aroostook, western Maine at peak foliage conditions

Maine’s fall foliage colors are approaching their peak.

State conservation officials said in their weekly fall foliage report on Wednesday that Aroostook County and the western part of the state are now reporting peak conditions. The eastern part of the state from Calais to Bar Harbor is reporting 75 percent to 100 percent toward peak.

The report says that leaf drop is still relatively low, meaning there are plenty of colorful leaves left on trees for viewing.

Boothbay Harbor man, 33, arrested in theft of pickup

A Boothbay Harbor man who Scarborough police allege stole a pickup truck from a local business was apprehended Wednesday night.

Sgt. Mary Pearson said that 33-year-old John Bedirian stole the truck, which had been parked outside a Pine Point business, shortly after 5 p.m.

The vehicle was stopped by police a few minutes later on Route 1 near the Oak Hill intersection.

Bedirian was arrested without incident.

Bedirian, who is being held at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland, was charged with theft, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, carrying a concealed weapon, operating after suspension, and three counts of violating the conditions of his bail.

Bedirian is also wanted in Lincoln County for failure to appear in court.
