UNIONDALE, N.Y. – John Tavares scored his first two goals of the season and defenseman Matt Donovan added the first of his NHL career to lift the New York Islanders over the Phoenix Coyotes 6-1 on Tuesday night.

Peter Regin and Tavares scored in the first period for the Islanders (2-0-1), and Donovan, Tavares and Colin McDonald connected in the second against beleaguered goalie Mike Smith.

FLYERS 2, PANTHERS 1: Brayden Schenn and Braydon Coburn scored goals to make Philadelphia’s Craig Berube a winner at home in his coaching debut, a day after Peter Laviolette was fired after an 0-3 start.

PENGUINS 5, HURRICANES 2: Jussi Jokinen scored his first career hat trick as the Penguins pulled away for a win at Pittsburgh.

Jokinen helped the Penguins improve to 3-0, scoring in the first period and adding two goals in the third after Carolina drew even at 2-2.

AVALANCHE 2, MAPLE LEAFS 1: P.A. Parenteau scored early in the third period in a goal that stood up to video review as Colorado earned a win at Toronto.

LIGHTNING 3, SABRES 2: Alex Killorn scored 2:50 into overtime to give visiting Tampa Bay a come-from-behind victory over the winless Sabres.

PREDATORS 3, WILD 2: Filip Forsberg and Colin Wilson scored power-play goals 39 seconds apart in the first period as Nashville won its home opener.
