Coyotes send forward Yip to the Portland Pirates

The Phoenix Coyotes assigned veteran forward Brandon Yip to the Portland Pirates, the club’s AHL affiliate.

Yip, 28, who missed the Pirates’ first two games of the season after he was called up to Phoenix, recorded three goals and had five assists in 34 games last season with the Nashville Predators.

In parts of four NHL seasons with the Predators and Colorado Avalanche, Yip has 29 goals and 27 assists in 172 regular-season games and three goals and three assists in 16 Stanley Cup games.

ERSTE BANK OPEN: Radek Stepanek and Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic earned straight-set wins in the opening round at Vienna.

The fifth-seeded Stepanek beat Martin Fischer of Austria 7-5, 6-3.

The eighth-seeded Rosol had 13 aces in a 6-3, 7-5 win over Jesse Huta Galung of the Netherlands.

KREMLIN CUP: Svetlana Kuznetsova, a two-time Grand Slam champion who last won a tournament three years ago, advanced to the second round at Moscow, beating Lesia Tsurenko 7-5, 6-2.

LUXEMBOURG OPEN: Fifth-seeded Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic defeated Peng Shuai of China 7-5, 6-4 to reach the second round at Luxembourg.

STOCKHOLM OPEN: Sixth-seeded Benoit Paire of France defeated Santiago Giraldo of Colombia 6-4, 6-4 to reach the second round at Stockholm.

COLLEGES

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Desiree Parent scored twice as St. Joseph’s (12-2-0, 7-1-0 GNAC) ran off a 6-1 win over Rivier (3-9-1, 2-6-0) at Standish.

Jessica Capozzi, Kim Jordan, Sam Peters and Jodi Pollack also scored for St. Joseph’s.

MEN’S SOCCER: Kyle Shangraw scored 30 minutes into the game and Fabrice Iraduha added a pair of second-half goals to give St. Joseph’s (12-2, 6-0 GNAC) a 3-0 win over the Raiders (2-9-1, 1-4-1) at Standish.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR: Brian Vickers will miss the rest of the NASCAR season because of a blood clot in his right calf. Vickers was placed on blood-thinning medication that will prevent him from racing.

ROAD RACING

CHICAGO MARATHON: A man with muscular dystrophy was the last runner to cross the finish line of the Chicago Marathon – nearly 17 hours after he started the race.

Maickel Melamed, 38, of Venezuela made it across the finish line of the 26.2-mile race at 1:30 a.m. on Monday. About 100 people cheered him on as he finished.

BASKETBALL

NBA: Sacramento Kings power forward Carl Landry will have hip surgery Tuesday and probably miss much of the season.

Former NBA player Joe C. Meriweather, who played for 10 years and later coached women’s basketball at Park University in Missouri, died in Columbus, Ga. He was 59. He is the most successful women’s basketball coach in Park University history, leading the school to its only NAIA national championship tournament in the 2005-06 season.

WNBA: The Minnesota Lynx celebrated their second WNBA championship in three years with a parade through downtown Minneapolis.

GOLF

PGA: Two-time major champion Rory McIlroy has launched legal action against his former management company.

McIlroy alleges he was misled by Horizon Sports Management, which was “primarily concerned with maximizing their own share of any commission.”
