One of the state’s top goalkeepers has been splitting time this fall between playing in net and in the field.

Charlie Mull, a Cheverus senior drawing interest from Division II and III college coaches because of his goalkeeping ability, has scored six goals this season.

“Charlie is obviously an accomplished goalie but he’s also a dynamic player in the field,” Coach Bill LeBlanc said.

Last week Mull had eight saves to lead the Stags to a 1-0 victory against South Portland. Two days later he scored during a 4-2 victory over Bonny Eagle.

“He plays in goal against the top-tier teams and we’re giving his backup (Ben Peterson) some experience against the second-tier teams,” LeBlanc said.

Mull was in goal Tuesday in a 5-0 victory against Noble in North Berwick.

Out of goal, Mull plays in the midfield or at the top of the Stags’ formation.

In his six games as a goalie, he has three shutouts, allowing a total of four goals while playing against Deering, Windham, Portland, Scarborough, South Portland and Noble.

THREE FRESHMEN are putting up big numbers for Greater Portland Christian, a Class D school in South Portland.

With one game left in the regular season, Ethan Spaulding, Jeremiah Hammond and Eddie Daigneault have combined for more than 80 percent of the team’s goals.

Spaulding, the son of Coach Chris Spaulding, leads the team with 26 goals. Hammond follows with 10 and Daigneault has scored five. The Lions (8-4-1) have 51 goals.

“I have sat Ethan and Jeremiah as much as I can in lopsided games, which can be a challenge at times with our short roster,” Coach Spaulding said. “They are a huge reason for our success this season and are a huge part of our team’s future.”

Ethan Spaulding, who scored 11 goals for the Lions last season as an eighth-grader, already has 37 career goals. Anthony Simpson, who graduated in 2011, holds the school record with 60.

Greater Portland Christian, which has clinched a berth in the Western Class D tournament, will be home against Richmond in its regular-season finale Friday.

KEY MATCHUP: Round two of the season series between Western Class B’s top two teams – Greely and Yarmouth –will be played Wednesday night at Yarmouth.

On Sept. 9, the teams played to a 2-2 tie at Cumberland. In that game, the undefeated Clippers rallied for two goals in the final 18 minutes to come away with the tie.
