Celtics fall to Nets; Pierce has 10 rebounds in first game against his former team

Paul Pierce made just one basket in his first game against his former team, but grabbed 10 rebounds and added five assists to help the Brooklyn Nets beat the Boston Celtics 82-80 at New York on Tuesday night.

Brook Lopez scored 20 points and Andrey Blatche had 14 starting in place of Kevin Garnett for the Nets.

• Utah Jazz rookie Trey Burke will undergo surgery on a broken finger on his shooting hand, as pins will be inserted to stabilize the point guard’s right index finger.

• The Atlanta Hawks signed Cartier Martin, who played with the Wizards the last three seasons.

WORLD CUP: England qualified for its fifth straight World Cup, beating Poland 2-0 on goals by Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard. England (6-0-4), headed to its 14th World Cup overall, won Group H by one point over Ukraine (6-1-3).

COLLEGES

FIELD HOCKEY: Carley Denis and Kelsey Dumond scored off penalty corners, and the stingy St. Joseph’s (10-2, 5-2) defense held Husson’s (8-5, 5-1) offense at bay to preserve the 2-0 win at Standish.

Emma Astbury made three saves in goal for the Monks. Dolloff notched a pair of stops in the first half and Maicee Gustin made three saves in the second for the Eagles.

• Maine (8-6) got goals from different players for a 4-2 win over Dartmouth (4-7) at Hanover, N.H.

For Maine, Sydney Veljacic and Danielle Aviani had first-half goals and Holly Stewart and Nicole Sevey scored after intermission.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Kentucky Coach John Calipari stopped short of calling his latest freshmen group the best ever – but given the talent, Kentucky could start an all-freshman team.

His contingent of eight first-year players includes McDonald’s All-Americans Dakari Johnson and twins Andrew and Aaron Harrison, plus Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball, Dominique Hawkins.

STOCKHOLM OPEN: American Jack Sock beat Australian Bernard Tomic 6-4, 6-2 to set up a second-round match with top-seeded David Ferrer at Stockholm.

LUXEMBOURG OPEN: Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki struggled to a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win over local Mandy Minella to reach the second round at Luxembourg. Second-seeded Sloane Stephens of the United States had an easier time, defeating Swiss wild card Timea Bacsinszky 6-3, 6-3.

ERSTE BANK OPEN: Daniel Brands of Germany beat Andreas Haider-Maurer 6-4, 7-6 (5) in the first round at Vienna.
