BANGOR — When Bangor senior Rye Powell competed at the high school individual state golf championship Saturday at Natanis Golf Course, perhaps it was only fitting that he started on the second hole of the Tomahawk course while his brother Drew, a sophomore, started on the fourth hole.

The second hole is a 381-yard par-4 with a water hazard – a perfect fit for Rye’s personality and golf style.

The fourth hole is a short par-3 – a perfect for Drew.

While they were the only brother combo in the field, make no mistake about it, the Powells view the game of golf through completely different lenses.

“I like to play and just have fun, talk with my friends,” says Rye. “I like to hit the ball as far as you can, try cool things.”

Rye says he practices very little. His handicap is about 2.5.

“I play for fun, too,” says Drew, “but the fun part is the challenge. It’s the toughest game. You’re playing against yourself every time you tee it up.”

Drew says he practices every day. His handicap is about 1.5.

Bangor Coach Rob Jarvais puts it this way.

“Rye enjoys golf, Drew is serious about golf. Rye will go for a shot over the trees, Drew will use a 6-iron instead of a 7 if that’s what it takes. Both are strong competitors, they just go about it differently.”

Which is why they don’t play much golf together.

Rye’s aggressive, hit-it-as-hard-as-you-can, as-far-as-you-can, happy-go-lucky style drives Drew crazy.

“I’ll say ‘Rye that’s a terrible shot,’ then he’ll say something like ‘it doesn’t matter where you hit it as long as you can find it.’”

It is no wonder Drew says he likes watching PGA rookie Jordan Spieth. Rye is a Tiger Woods guy.

Rye says golf tournaments are fun to play but too much stress for him. Yet he has no problem with the stress of trying to stop a speeding puck coming his way when he plays goalie for the Bangor hockey team.

“You don’t have time to think about the puck. You can stand over a putt all day and stress out on it.”

So when the golf season ends and winter sports season sets in, the Powell brothers will do what fits them best.

Rye will try to lead Bangor hockey back to another regional championship game.

Drew will visit relatives in Florida during school vacations. He wants to work on his golf game.

BOYS’ SOCCER: Madawaska’s Ian Lee scored three goals in Friday’s 4-1 win over Southern Aroostook. With every goal, Lee adds to his all-time state score record, which is now 121. The Owls play their final regular-season game Monday against Class B Caribou, the only team to beat Madawaska this fall.
