The Portland Fire Department is crediting a fire alarm and sprinkler system at 12 Weymouth St. with keeping damage minimal during a cooking fire at 10 p.m. Friday.

The fire activated the alarm system and residents were evacuating the building when firefighters arrived.

The fire started in a kitchen in a second-floor apartment. One man was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Deputy Fire Chief David Jackson said the fire could have been very dangerous had there been no fire alarm and sprinkler system.
