Sixth-seeded Deering applied pressure for nearly the entire game and defeated 11th-seeded Kennebunk 3-0 in a Western Class A girls’ soccer prelim Saturday at Memorial Field.

Simone Lauture scored two second-half goal after freshman Meghana Clere got her sixth goal of the season in the first half.

The victory put Deering (11-3-1) in the regional quarterfinals against third-seeded Thornton Academy (12-1-1) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Saco. On Oct. 11, the teams played to a 1-1 tie on Deering High’s turf field.

“We definitely have confidence going into that game,” Deering Coach Kevin Olson said. “(It’s) back to the drawing board on Monday and set up a game plan for them.”

Deering’s game plan for Kennebunk (3-11-1), a team it didn’t play during the regular season, worked to perfection.

“I just wanted us to play our game,” Deering Coach Kevin Olson said. “I know (Kennebunk) pays a tough schedule so you can’t look at their record. I had to base it on last year when they played in our conference.

“We just were more concerned in what we need to do. How we needed to take care of the ball. Our spacing. Pinching the ball effectively and executing. We did a good job of doing that.

Clere opened the scoring after 17 minutes when she broke in alone down the middle of the field.

She sent a slightly deflected ball inside the left post after winning a battle with a defender and goalie Kyra Schwartzman for control.

Kennebunk’s lone shot in the first half didn’t come until the 37th minute.

Lauture completed the scoring by putting in two goals less than 20 minutes apart in the second half.
