ORONO — Connor Leen scored a power-play goal with 1:33 left in overtime as the University of Maine beat Massachusetts 3-2 in a nonleague hockey game Friday night at Alfond Arena.

The Black Bears (2-2) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the opening period on goals by Mark Anthoine at 6:48 and Ben Hutton on a power play at 14:19.

The Minutemen knotted the score on second-period goals by Ray Pigozzi and Conor Sheary. Sheary’s goal came on a power play.

Devin Shore had two assists for Maine, including on Leen’s winner. Josh Henke also set up two goals, and Martin Ouellette stopped 27 shots.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

MERCYHURST 2, MAINE 1: Christine Bestland scored the go-ahead goal with 4:40 left in the second period and the Lakers (4-3-1) held on to edge the Black Bears (0-4-1) at Erie, Pa.

Mercyhurst opened the scoring just 2:38 into the game, but Maine evened the score on a power-play goal by Jess Vallotton 3:58 into the second period. Emille Brigham and Kayla Kaluzny each collected an assist on Vallotton’s goal.

Meghann Treacy finished with 41 saves for the Black Bears.

FOOTBALL

BYU 37, BOISE STATE 20: Taysom Hill threw for 339 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for 69 yards and another score to help the Cougars (6-2) beat the Broncos (5-3) at Provo, Utah.

Hill completed 29 of 41 passes to lead the Cougars to their fifth straight victory – and the school’s first in four meetings with Boise State. Jamaal Williams ran for 107 yards for BYU.

Grant Hedrick threw for 232 yards and a touchdown in his first start for the Broncos, and Jay Ajayi added 151 yards on the ground.

Boise State was unable to overcome four turnovers – three in the second half – and failed to give Chris Petersen a victory in his 100th game as the Broncos’ coach.
