AMHERST, Mass. — Martin Ouellette stopped all four shots he faced in overtime and finished with 31 saves as the University of Maine (4-2, 1-0) played to a 1-1 tie against Massachusetts (2-5, 0-2) in a Hockey East game Friday night.

After a scoreless first period, Maine got on the board first 3:35 into the second period when Ben Hutton scored a power-play goal on assists from Devin Shore and Connor Leen.

The Minutemen rallied to tie the game with 2:32 left in the second period on a goal by Sheary Conor that was assisted by Ben Gallacher and Marc Hetnik. 

UNE 2, SUNY CANTON 2: Ryan Quinn scored the equalizer for the Nor’easters just two minutes after the Kangaroos had taken the lead as the teams played to a tie in a season opener at Canton, N.Y.

UNE opened the scoring for the Nor’easters on an assist from Zeth Zielinski, but the Kangaroos tied the game less than five minutes later.

Canton regained the lead 7:29 into the second period, before the Nor’easters tied the score on Quinn’s goal, which was assisted by Chris Harlow and Ben Pearl.

Colby Drost finished with 24 saves for the Nor’easters, who outshot Canton, 39-26.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

NORTHEASTERN 1, MAINE 1: The University of Maine (0-5-2) held visiting Northeastern (4-5-1) to a tie at Alfond Arena in Orono.

Kelly MacDonald scored for the Black Bears with 4:46 left in the first period, off a pass from Jennifer More. Katie MacSorley tied it for Northeastern with a short-handed goal 4:47 into the second.

Both teams were scoreless the rest of the way.

Chloe Desjardins finished with 25 saves in the Northeastern goal, while 27 scoring attempts were stopped by Maine’s Meghann Treacy.

UNE 3, CHATHAM 1: Emily Corrales scored two goals to help the University of New England open its season with a victory over Chatham University, at the Harold Alfond Forum in Biddeford.

Corrales scored at 12:19 of the first period with an assist from Shannon Smith. Chatham tied the game with 2:15 left in the second period on a goal from Brianna Rice. Senior captain Jenni Poulin scored the go-ahead goal for the Nor’easters 1:51 into the third period with a backhanded shot. Corrales scored an insurance goal with 2:33 left in the contest.

Sophomore goalie Samantha Scobee turned in 16 saves, including one on a second-period breakaway by Rice. Megan Buchanan stopped 30 shots for the Cougars.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SMCC 98, BUNKER HILL CC 40: Alicia Hoyt scored 15 points and Danielle McCusker added 14 to lead Southern Maine Community College (1-1) in a home-opening rout of Bunker Hill. Maria Veino chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Seawolves.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

SOUTHERN MAINE CC 78, HOLYOKE CC 57: Tong Akot scored 12 of his game-high 14 points in the second half as the Seawolves (3-0) pulled away from the Cougars (0-1) in their home opener at South Portland.

Josh Gormley and Jose Nouchanthavong added 11 points apiece for the Seawolves. Nouchanthavong also had eight assists and six rebounds.
