Talk on managing diabetes

“Some Things You Should Know About Managing Diabetes” is the subject of a Central Maine Medical Center Accenting Your Health presentation set for Monday in the Chairman’s Rooms on the lower level of the 12 High Street Medical Office Building.

Kate Gosselin, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator (C.D.E), and Mercedes Peralta, R.N., C.D.E., will discuss several topics, including sugar substitutes, low blood sugar, and A1C testing (average blood sugar level testing).

Two sessions will be offered, the first from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and the second from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

The format will include a discussion in which one of the presenters will talk about their personal experience with diabetes and what has helped them manage their disease.

Religious revival recalled

The talk “The Religious Revival in North Yarmouth, 1791-1793” will be offered at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Yarmouth History Center, at 118 East Elm St.

In the early 1790s, the Congregational church in North Yarmouth – which included modern-day Yarmouth, North Yarmouth, and Cumberland – experienced a religious revival that was the largest in Maine since the Great Awakening of the 1730s and 1740s.

This talk will describe the circumstances that contributed to the revival and the movement’s distinctive qualities.

The cost is $3 for members and $5 for non-members.

Help needy pet owners

Spectrum Generations is conducting its fourth annual Pet Supply Drive to assist pet owners in need from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, through Dec. 13.

Donations may be dropped off to Spectrum Generations, at 61 Park St.

Items needed most include cat and dog food, litter supplies, food bowls, brushes and pet hygiene items.

USM women host hoopsters

The University of Southern Maine Huskies women’s basketball team will host its annual Huskies’ Shooting Clinic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Costello Sports Complex on the University of Southern Maine campus.

Under the direction of head coach Gary Fifield, the USM staff and players will instruct participants in a day of instruction of basketball and shooting fundamentals.

Exhibit free to vets

Maine Historical Society will honor American veterans by offering free admission during the week of Nov. 11.

Veterans will be able to view the year-long exhibition “This Rebellion: Maine and the Civil War” at no charge.

More than 70,000 Mainers were soldiers or sailors during the Civil War. Many women served as nurses at the front or at military hospitals and hundreds of other Mainers gathered supplies for soldiers and raised money to support nurses and relief efforts.

The exhibit explores the personal experiences of those men and women through letters they wrote, artifacts they collected, photographs and official records, among other items saved and treasured long after the four-year conflict ended.

Each guest will receive a hand-made pottery bowl of their choice, created by artisans of the Southern Mane Clay Guild, Sanford High School and Salmon Falls Pottery.
