Court upholds dump truck driver’s 2010 conviction
Maine’s highest court has upheld a 52-year-old man’s attempted-murder conviction for ramming a police officer’s cruiser with a dump truck during a chase.
The Maine Supreme Judicial Court on Thursday rejected Bartolo Ford’s appeal of his 2010 conviction.
During trial, prosecutors said Ford fled from Auburn police after they confronted him about some stolen concrete cylinders. They say he repeatedly rammed their cruisers with his dump truck during the chase. One of the officers shot Ford in the hip.
Ford’s lawyer blamed his actions on post-traumatic stress disorder and medications that caused him to have a sustained flashback to his military service during the Gulf War.
The supreme court rejected Ford’s argument that the trial judge should have instructed the jury on self-defense and intoxication.

Prosecutors say the stabbing occurred during a confrontation at a Mechanic Falls home in July 20.

Police say that a Bangor man has been charged with terrorizing after a Maine health center received a call that was considered threatening.
Bangor police Sgt. Catherine Rumsey said that Eastern Maine Healthcare Mall in Bangor reported the call Thursday morning. Police did not say what the call entailed.
Rumsey says officials at the health facility chose to lock their offices after the call was received to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
Kip Reischman, 56, has been arrested. Police said he was taken to Penobscot County Jail.
Rumsey said the health facility has been reopened and patients are able to go to their appointments as usual.
Presque Isle man pleads guilty to passport fraud
Prosecutors say a Presque Isle man has pleaded guilty to using a fake name to fraudulently obtain a U.S. passport.
Christopher Phillips pleaded guilty Wednesday in U.S. District Court to making a false statement in a U.S. passport application and to misuse of a U.S. passport.
Authorities say Phillips, 42, a dual citizen of the United States and Canada, used a false name to apply for a U.S. passport in 2007, then used it in August 2011 in an attempt to enter the United States at Fort Fairfield. Phillips also had a Maine driver’s license and debit cards in the false name. Prosecutors say Phillips used the falsified documents in an effort to conceal his criminal history from authorities.
