MANCHESTER, N.H. — Kirstin Sandreuter of Greely placed fourth in the girls’ race and Josef Holt-Andrews of Telstar was third in the boys’ race Saturday for the top Maine performances at the New England high school cross country championships.
Sandreuter was edged at the finish line for third place, finishing the 5-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 48.6 seconds. Hannah Debalsi of Staples High in Westport, Conn., won the race in 17:18.
Holt-Andrews posted a time of 15:12.9, just four seconds behind winner Trevor Hopper of Ridgefield, Conn. Liam Simpson of Cape Elizabeth was eighth in 15:45.1, and Will Shafer of Gray-New Gloucester placed 17th in 15:53.6. Cape Elizabeth finished 11th in the boys’ team standings, three spots behind Lewiston.
OAK HILL 21, LISBON 20: Parker Asselin threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Alex Mace with 1:29 remaining and Adam Merrill kicked the extra point to lift the second-seeded Raiders (8-2) over the third-seeded Greyhounds (7-3) in a Western Class D semifinal at Wales.
Lisbon trailed 14-6 in the fourth quarter. Quincy Thompson’s 1-yard run cut the deficit to 14-12, and the Greyhounds took the lead on Joe Philbrick’s 8-yard run with 2:26 left.
WATERVILLE 42, MDI 27: Dan Pooler rushed for 305 yards and four touchdowns as the second-seeded Purple Panthers (8-1) beat the second-seeded Trojans (7-3) in an Eastern Class C semifinal at Waterville.
Waterville finished with nearly 400 yards on the ground as it avenged its only loss of the season, despite the absence of eight players who are either academically ineligible or were suspended for breaking school rules.
The Panthers held MDI to minus-1 yard in the second half. Pooler’s 63-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half tied the game at 21, and his 5-yard run midway through the quarter gave Waterville the lead for good, 28-21.
WINSLOW 39, BELFAST 14: Zach Guptill and Dylan Hapworth combined for 417 yards rushing and three touchdowns to lead the top-seeded Black Raiders (8-1) over the fifth-seeded Lions (6-4) in an Eastern Class C semifinal at Winslow.
