BURLINGTON, Vt. — Chris Muscoby scored with less than three minutes remaining to give the University of Vermont a 3-2 nonconference men’s hockey victory over Maine Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

The Black Bears dropped to 6-5-1 overall and remain 3-2-1 in Hockey East action. They outshot Vermont 34-24 but have yet to win in five games away from Alfond Arena.

Vermont is 6-5-1 overall and 4-4-0 in conference play.

The game was tied at 2 through two periods.

Vermont had taken a 1-0 lead in the first after only nine seconds of its first power play. Defenseman Michael Paliotta found the upper far corner of the net from the left point.

Maine jumped ahead 2-1 in the second on goals by Devin Shore, his fifth of the season, and Steven Swavely, his third.

Shore shoveled in the rebound of a Stu Higgins shot from in close on a power play. At even strength, Swavely tipped in a shot from just inside the blue line by Conor Riley, who had taken a pass from Jake Rutt.

Six minutes later, Vermont added its own even-strength goal, when Jake Fallon poked the puck past Maine goalie Martin Ouellette from a scrum near the left post. Ouellette finished with 21 saves.

Despite the fact that both Maine and Vermont are Hockey East members, the game did not count in conference standings.
