Clippers, Rangers prevail over Capers, Dragons

Ariel Potter scored twice during Yarmouth/Freeport’s 5-1 victory in girls’ hockey over host Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete in Portland.

Emily Johnson and Michelle Robichaud had a goal and two assists each, while Katie Brown added a goal and an assist.

After a scoreless first period, the Clippers took control. Brown converted Johnson’s assist at 4:50 to ignite a four-goal period. Allison Mills came through with a power play for Cape Elizabeth three minutes into the third period, but Potter countered two minutes later to reinstate the four-goal margin.

Yarmouth/Freeport improves to 3-0 while Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete falls to 0-3.

GREELY 9, BRUNSWICK 0: Denita Storey scored three times, and Sarah Kurland had two goals and three assists as the Rangers (2-0) beat Brunswick (0-4) in Falmouth.

Claire Mendes made 69 saves for the Dragons. Nica Todd stopped all three shots she faced in net for Greely.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL: Rebecca Siegel scored 17 points and Maggie DuChene 10 as Berwick (1-0) beat Bancroft (0-1) 60-32 in Worcester, Mass.

Siegel scored 11 in the first half and DuChene all of her 10 for a convincing 35-15 midpoint lead.

DuChene also had eight rebounds for the Bulldogs, while Dominique St. Pierre contributed eight steals and nine points.

GIRLS’ HOCKEY: A game-tying goal with 19 seconds left in regulation and an overtime tally gave Governor’s Academy a 3-2 victory over North Yarmouth Academy in the opening contest for both teams at the Travis Roy Arena.

Elizabeth Coughlin’s goal with 4:24 left in the third period had given NYA (0-1) a 2-1 lead, but the Governors, after pulling their goalie, used a two-player advantage to net the equalizer.

Olivia Madore gave the Panthers an early lead when she stuffed in Keeley Bartolini’s rebound.

GOLF

LPGA: Jaye Marie Green shot a course-record 10-under 62 to take the first-round lead in the LPGA Tour’s qualifying tournament at Jones Course in Daytona, Fla.

The 19-year-old Green, from Boca Raton, Fla., was 29th on the Symetra Tour money list this year.

WORLD CUP: The Brazilian government is downplaying delays in completing 2014 World Cup stadiums, saying that missing FIFA’s deadline will not affect the country’s ability to successfully host next year’s tournament.

MLS: The New York Red Bulls have re-signed midfielder Eric Alexander, defender Kosuke Kimura and forward Peguy Luyindula to new contracts.

The Red Bulls, who had the best regular-season record in Major League Soccer this season, didn’t release contract details.

MOTORSPORTS

INDYCAR: Longtime motorsports announcer Paul Page will return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network as its lead announcer next season.

Page served as the network’s anchor voice from 1977 to 1987, taking over after the death of Sid Collins.

NASCAR: NBC Sports Group has named Rick Allen lead race announcer for its coverage of NASCAR.

Allen will join driver Jeff Burton in the booth. The third member of the broadcast team has yet to be announced.
