FRIDAY

Yule Log Hike

10-11:30 p.m. in Boothbay Harbor

Celebrate the Winter Solstice a day early at Boothbay Region Land Trust’s Penny Lake Preserve while gathering natural items for a yule log. Then head to the land trust office to create your log. The yule log has long been a tradition tied to the winter solstice. Since this is the darkest time of the year, the burning of the log celebrates the days getting longer after the solstice. Makes a nice Christmas gift. See thall@bbrlt.org or call 633-4818.

SATURDAY

Birding Bonanza

8 a.m. in Falmouth

Get out in the cold and participate in the winter snow bird contest at Freeport Wild Bird Supply. The contest was introduced four years ago as a way to encourage people to get outdoors in winter. The Freeport store runs a free Saturday morning bird walk throughout the year, but encourages people to get out December through March through the annual contest. Participants accumulate points based on the temperature at the start of the walk. The colder it is, the more points are awarded. The contest runs through March 29, at which point the top three birders with the most points will receive prizes. Birders meet at the store at 8 a.m. for a short carpool to local birding sites. The caravan will return to the store at 10:30 a.m. No cost. All welcome. The store is located at 541 Route 1 in Falmouth. For more information, call 865-6000, or write freeportwildbird@yahoo.com.
