AUGUSTA — Maine Gov. Paul LePage is criticizing Washington lawmakers for reducing retirement benefits for military retirees.

The Republican governor called it “disgraceful” that the federal government chose to cut benefits for military members in the $47 trillion budget.

The budget agreement passed by Congress last week cuts inflation increases of pensions for military retirees under the age of 62. The change is expected to save $6 billion.

LePage says there are billions of dollars of wasteful spending that can be cut and is urging lawmakers to restore the full benefits.
