BRUNSWICK — Matt Mathias scored 13 points to lead four players in double digits as the Bowdoin men’s basketball team ran its record to 10-0 by edging Bridgewater State 64-59 at the Morrell Gym Tuesday night.

Andrew Madlinger and Grant White each added 12 points, and Keegan Pieri scored 11 for the Polar Bears, who used a 9-0 run late in the second half to pull away from a 47-all tie with the Bears (5-7).

John Swords hit a go-ahead free throw, then scored on a dunk to spark the decisive run.

 

BRANDEIS 83, BATES 78: Graham Safford scored a career-high 33 points for the Bobcats (7-4), but the Judges (8-3) made 10 of 12 free throws in the final 3:46 to pull away from a 71-all tie at Waltham, Mass.

It was the third game of the season that Safford had at least 30 points.

WENTWORTH 74, UNE 40: Kurt Steiner scored 11 points and Tom Nason had 10 for the Nor’easters (1-10, 1-3 Commonwealth Coast) in a loss to the Leopards (6-5, 3-1) at Biddeford.

 

(2) SYRACUSE 72, VA. TECH 52: C.J. Fair scored 17 points and the Orange (15-0, 2-0 ACC) used a 16-0 run to pull away in the second half at Virginia Tech (8-6, 1-1).

 

(5) MICH. STATE 72, (3) OHIO STATE 68: Keith Appling made a tie-breaking 3-pointer with 29 seconds left and finished with 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds to help the host Spartans (14-1, 3-0 Big Ten) edge the Buckeyes (15-1, 2-1) in OT.

(9) IOWA STATE 87, (7) BAYLOR 72: DeAndre Kane had a season-high 30 points with nine assists and the Cyclones (14-0, 2-0 Big 12) rolled at home.

Baylor is 12-2, 0-1.

 

(16) DUKE 79, GA. TECH 57: Rodney Hood scored 15 of his 27 points in the second half and the Blue Devils (12-3, 1-1 ACC) won at home against the Yellow Jackets (9-6, 0-2).

SOUTHERN MAINE 3, SACRED HEART 3: Melissa Robbins scored a power-play goal with 1:22 left in regulation, and Alexius Schutt made four saves in OT, allowing Sacred Heart (2-7-5) to escape with a tie against the Huskies (6-5-1) in Gorham.

Southern Maine led 2-1 entering the third period on goals by Cassandra Sherman and Lynn Kozlowski, only to have the Pioneers’ Natasha Klinoff knot the score. Erin Banfield countered for the Huskies.

Casey Stathopoulos scored in the first period for Sacred Heart.

 

ST. ANSELM 5, BOWDOIN 2: Five players scored for the Hawks (12-1), who took a 2-1 lead in the first period and held off the Polar Bears (4-5) at Brunswick.

Schuyler Nardelli had a goal and an assist for Bowdoin.

NICHOLS 2, UNE 1: Grace Murphy scored twice and the Bison (3-8) held off the Nor’easters (5-5-3) at Harrisville, R.I.

Murphy struck at 6:13 of the first and then at 9:11 of the third. UNE got one back on Gabby Crugnale’s goal with 4:16 to play.

MEN’S HOCKEY

COLBY 3, USM 3: Nick Lanza scored from Alex Walsh with 1:32 left in regulation to pull the Mules (5-4-3) into a draw with the Huskies (4-6-3) at Gorham.

Kevin Doherty and Tyler Lingel also scored for Colby. USM got two goals from Kelby Lorenz and one from Todd Bannerman.

BOWDOIN 4, UNE 3: Connor Quinn scored his second goal of the game with 7:06 left to give the Polar Bears (6-3-2) the advantage over the Nor’easters (5-8-1) at Brunswick.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UNE 67, WENTWORTH 54: Kelly Coleman had 19 points, and the host Nor’easters (8-1, 4-0 Commonwealth Coast) held off the Leopards (3-7, 0-4).

Lauren Hayden added 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists for UNE.

BOWDOIN 73, EMMANUEL 52: Sara Binkhorst was 4 of 5 from 3-point range on her way to 16 points, and the Polar Bears (12-1) bounced back from their first loss of the season with an easy win over the Saints (7-5) at Brunswick.

 

USM 74, HUSSON 46: Erin McNamara scored a career-high 29 rebounds to lead the Huskies (7-5) past the Eagles (3-6).

NOTES

BCS: Florida State’s dramatic win over Auburn was watched by an average of 25.6 million viewers on ESPN – down 3 percent from the 26.4 million for Alabama’s 42-14 rout of Notre Dame in a matchup of two big-name programs.

 

UTEP: The University of Texas at El Paso said it kicked McKenzie Moore, Justin Crosgile and Jalen Ragland off the basketball team after they bet on at least one sporting event.
