BANGOR — Liz Wood scored 12 of her 17 points in the first half, and the University of Maine rolled to a 68-39 women’s basketball victory over UMBC in front of 1,876 at the Cross Insurance Center Wednesday night.

Ashleigh Roberts added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Black Bears (7-8), who led 34-9 before the game was 10 minutes old. Ten of 11 players scored for Maine.

Taylor McCarley scored 16 points for UMBC (2-12).

ST. JOSEPH’S 89, UM-MACHIAS 34: Lindsay Moore scored 18 points to lead the Monks (8-3) over the Clippers (2-11) at Standish. Moore provided eight points during the Monks’ opening 21-1 run.

Abby Young finished with 13 points for the Monks and led the team with nine rebounds.

(7) BAYLOR 78, WEST VIRGINIA 62: Odyssey Sims scored a career-high 48 points and set a school record for career 3-pointers (201) in leading the Bears (13-1, 3-0 Big 12) to a win over the Mountaineers (13-2, 2-1).

(4) WISCONSIN 95, (23) ILLINOIS 70: Ben Brust scored 18 points, Sam Dekker added 17 and the Badgers (16-0, 3-0 Big Ten) used a 20-0 run in the first half to easily beat the visiting Illini (13-3, 2-1).

(6) WICHITA ST. 66, ILLINOIS ST. 47: Cleanthony Early and Ron Baker each scored 11 points, and the Shockers (16-0, 3-0 Missouri Valley Conference) cruised past the visiting Redbirds (8-7, 1-2).

(8) VILLANOVA 83, SETON HALL 67: Darrun Hilliard scored 19 points and the Wildcats (14-1, 3-0 Big East) hit a dozen 3-pointers in beating the Pirates (10-6, 1-2) at Newark, N.J.

(10) FLORIDA 74, SOUTH CAROLINA 58: Scottie Wilbekin scored 17 points before getting helped to the locker room with a sprained right ankle, and the Gators (12-2) opened SEC play with a home win over the Gamecocks (7-7).

(14) KENTUCKY 85, MISSISSIPPI STATE 63: James Young scored 26 points and the Wildcats (11-3, 1-0 SEC) rallied from a halftime deficit to beat the visiting Bulldogs (10-4, 0-1).

(18) KANSAS 90, OKLAHOMA 83: Wayne Selden Jr. shot 5 for 10 from 3-point range and finished with a career-high 24 points as the Jayhawks (10-4, 1-0 Big 12) topped the Sooners (12-3, 1-1) at Norman, Okla.

(19) UMASS 66, SAINT JOSEPH’S 62: Chaz Williams scored eight of his 22 points in the closing six minutes, leading the Minutemen (13-1, 1-0 Atlantic-10) to a comeback win over the visiting Hawks (9-5, 0-1).

GEORGIA 70, (21) MISSOURI 64: Charlie Mann scored 18 points, including the go-ahead basket with 35.8 seconds to go in overtime, and the visiting Bulldogs (7-6, 1-0 SEC) knocked off the Tigers (12-1, 1-1).

FOOTBALL

FLORIDA STATE: Receiving star Rashad Greene and starting linemen Cameron Erving and Tre Jackson will return for a chance to defend the national championship.

Quarterback Jameis Winston won the Manning Award, given annually to the nation’s top quarterback. The award comes two days after Winston led Florida State to a 34-31 victory over Auburn in the BCS championship game.

MICHIGAN: The Wolverines fired offensive coordinator Al Borges following a feast-or-famine season in which the team struggled to run the ball and protect its quarterback.

NOTRE DAME: Running back George Atkinson III has become the third Notre Dame player this offseason to skip his final year of eligibility and enter the NFL draft, joining defensive linemen Louis Nix III.

LOUISVILLE: A member of the board of trustees says Western Kentucky’s Bobby Petrino has accepted an offer to be the Cardinals next coach.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

SOUTHERN MAINE 4, SACRED HEART 0: Senior Erin Banfield scored two goals to pace the Huskies (7-5-1) in a shutout of Sacred Heart (2-8-5) at the USM Ice Arena in Gorham.

Banfield scored the winning goal at 9:36 of the first period with an assist from Chelsea Boucher.
