Ligety, Miller fall prey to bumpy giant slalom run

Defending champion Ted Ligety and Bode Miller skied out of their runs on the bumpy course of a World Cup giant slalom race eventually won by Felix Neureuther of Germany at Radelboden, Switzerland.

Ligety, third after the first run, was poised to take the lead but skied out after hitting a bumpy patch midway down the second run.

Miller skied out during the first run, losing his balance on softening snow in 43-degree temperatures.

Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway placed 12th and retained his lead in the overall World Cup standings.

Elisabeth Goergl beat Anna Fenninger for an Austrian 1-2 finish in the women’s downhill at Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria.

Goergl, the 2011 world champion, started 28th when the other top contenders had completed their race but led the field throughout.

Japanese teenager Sara Takanashi, 17, won the women’s ski jump at Sapporo, Japan, to claim her fifth title of the season and bolster her status as favorite for the Sochi Olympics.

FIGURE SKATING

U.S. CHAMPIONSHIPS: Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir won the pairs title at Boston, with their only deduction for a fall on her landing on a quad salchow.

With the win, they earned the inside track to a spot on the U.S. team for the Sochi Olympics next month.

EUROPEAN TOUR: England’s Tommy Fleetwood birdied the last hole in a third-round 69 to seize a one-shot lead with an overall 10-under 206 in the Volvo Champions at Durban, South Africa.

Dutchman Joost Luiten (70) and Victor Dubuisson (69) of France were tied for second at 9-under in the elite 36-player event at the Durban Country Club.

FRANCE: Defending champion Paris Saint-Germain moved five points ahead of Monaco at the top of the French league after coming from behind for a hard-fought 2-1 win at last-place Ajaccio.

SYDNEY INTERNATIONAL: Top-seeded Juan Martin del Potro outclassed defending champion Bernard Tomic 6-3, 6-1 in a 53-minute final at Melbourne, Australia.

Del Potro finished the match with his eighth ace and made only four unforced errors in securing his 18th career title and first in Sydney.

: John Isner had 23 aces in a match that had no service breaks to beat Lu Yen-hsun of Taiwan 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7) in the final at Auckland, New Zealand.

: Japan’s Kei Nishikori joined his new coach, Michael Chang, as a tournament champion with a 6-4, 7-5 exhibition win over Tomas Berdych.

MLB: Pitcher Stephen Strasburg agreed to a one-year, $3,975,000 deal with the Washington Nationals.

The 25-year-old right-hander is 29-19 over four seasons, including 8-9 last year with a 3.00 ERA in 30 starts.
