BINGHAM — Police on Tuesday will begin to examine video and still images taken from surveillance cameras at the Bingham branch of Camden National Bank, which was robbed Friday morning by a man wielding a hammer.

Banks across Maine were closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“As far as surveillance goes, the bank is going to download information for us so we can analyze it,” said Dale Lancaster, chief deputy of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department, on Monday. “I’ll probably know tomorrow morning what we have for video.”

Police said the robber was a white man, heavyset and about 6 feet tall. He was wearing a black ski mask and wielded a hammer.

Police are not saying whether he made threats at the bank on Main Street, U.S. Route 201. There was one customer in the bank during the robbery, but he was in an office, not in the main area, Lancaster said.

No employees or customers were injured. The robber got away with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police. The robber left the bank on foot and escaped the area in a vehicle, according to Lancaster. A description of the vehicle was not available, but Lancaster said police determined where it had been parked a few streets away by using a tracking dog.

So far, there are no suspects, Lancaster said Monday.

Police in Clinton said they do not think an armed robbery by a man also armed with a hammer at Super 95 One Stop on Saturday night is connected to the Bingham robbery.

Police ask that anyone with information on the Bingham bank robbery to contact the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department Detective Division at 207-474-9591, the tip line at 207-474-0230 or by email at sherifftips@somersetcounty-me.org.
