The Seattle Mariners announced on Friday the signing of right-handed pitcher Mark Rogers as a minor league free agent with an invitation to major league spring training.

Rogers, selected fifth overall by Milwaukee in the 2004 draft out of Mt. Ararat High, spent most of the 2013 season on the Brewers’ disabled list because of a right shoulder injury and appeared in 12 minor league games on a rehab assignment.

Rogers spent parts of two seasons with the Brewers in 2010 and 2012, compiling a record of 3-1 with a 3.49 ERA in 11 games, including nine starts. He’ll try to earn a spot on a staff that includes South Portland’s Charlie Furbush, a relief pitcher with the Mariners.

• The Mariners promoted Kevin Mather to team president and chief operating officer, replacing Chuck Armstrong, who is retiring at the end of the month.

Mather had been serving as executive vice president of finance and ballpark operations. He has been with the team since July 1996.

Armstrong, 71, has been Seattle’s team president for 28 of the previous 30 seasons. Armstrong announced he was retiring in late November.

WHITE SOX: Chicago agreed to a multiyear contract extension with Manager Robin Ventura. The terms were not disclosed.

GIANTS: San Francisco acquired left-hander David Huff from the Yankees for cash, two days after he was designated for assignment by New York to make room for Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka.

Huff, 29, was 3-1 with a 5.50 ERA for Cleveland and New York last year in 14 appearances, making two starts. The Yankees picked him up off waivers from the Indians in May.

CUBS: Chicago agreed to a one-year contract with All-Star pitcher Travis Wood, avoiding arbitration.

A person familiar with the situation said that the deal is for $3.9 million.

Wood was the Cubs’ most consistent starter last year, going 9-12 with a 3.11 ERA.

METS: Daisuke Matsuzaka agreed to a minor league contract and was invited to big league spring training camp.

The 33-year-old right-hander was 3-3 with a 4.42 ERA for the Mets last year after going 5-8 with a 3.92 ERA in 19 starts for Cleveland’s Triple-A team at Columbus.

MARLINS: Third baseman Ty Wigginton signed a minor league contract. Wigginton, 36, was released by the Cardinals in July after hitting .158 in 57 at-bats. He’s a career .261 hitter with 169 home runs.

DODGERS: Los Angeles signed infielder Chone Figgins to a minor league contract. Figgins, 36, last played in the majors in 2012 with Seattle.

BRAVES: Atlanta agreed to a minor league contract with right-hander Freddy Garcia, 37, who went 1-2 with a 1.65 in six games for the Braves last season.
