Monthly hike, 10 a.m. in Boothbay

Join the Boothbay Region Land for a free hike on the first Tuesday of each month and visit a different preserve. The hike is at a moderate pace. Group meets at trailhead parking lot. For more information call 633-4818.

Winter Carnival, 10 a.m. in Waterville

Waterville’s Winter Carnival will take place at the Quarry Road Recreation Area off North Street. No cost. Donations go toward the trails. Activities include Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, winter bike demonstrations, sledding and dog sled rides. Food from local restaurants will be offered, with a suggested “buck-a-cup” donation. Organizers ask that dogs be left home. For more information or to volunteer, call 680-4744.

Peterson’s Canal, 11 a.m. Feb. 9, Bath

Come explore the scenery and history of Bath’s Peterson Canal. The New Meadows Lake Association, Bath Historical Society, Friends of Merrymeeting Bay, and Kennebec Estuary Land Trust are sponsoring this annual hike along this historic Maine canal. The guided 2.5-mile scenic hike is only possible when the water is frozen and will take approximately two hours. Meet across from the boat launch to the New Meadows Lake on Old Brunswick Road in Bath. Participants are urged to bring snow shoes, depending on the snow cover. Bald Eagle Telemetry, 7 p.m. Feb. 25, Brunswick

Chris Desorbo, director of the raptor program at the Biodiversity Research Institute, will discuss research efforts around Maine’s bald eagle population. The talk will be held at Curtis Memorial Library and is sponsored by Merrymeeting Audubon. For more information, call 807-3679.
