EAST MILLINOCKET — A Maine paper mill has announced that it is temporarily laying off more than 200 workers from its East Millinocket facility.
WLBZ-TV reports that the 212 employees work at a Great Northern Paper mill that was shut down last month because of high production costs and low market prices.
The company says it is working on restructuring its mill operations and lowering production costs.
A company spokesman says “we understand this temporary work stoppage will be difficult for employees,” but it is necessary pending restructuring efforts.
Forty-four of the East Millinocket facility’s employees will stay on the job to maintain the needed systems for a production restart.
