FALMOUTH — She hopes to study fashion merchandising in college. But Alyse Bazinet has other matters on her mind right now.

“I just don’t want this to end.”

“This” is the high school girls’ hockey season. Bazinet is a senior co-captain for Falmouth, No. 2 seed in the West. The Yachtsmen (14-5) face the challenge of top-seeded and undefeated Scarborough (19-0) in the West region championship Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Portland Ice Arena.

The East title game, between Leavitt/Edward Little and Lewiston, will precede the West game at 5 p.m.

For Bazinet, a senior, this season has been too fun to stop now.

“I just love this team so much. We do so much together. I just don’t want it to end,” Bazinet said Monday afternoon, before leading her team in warm-up drills before their practice at Family Ice Center.

Bazinet knows the obstacle that Scarborough presents. The Red Storm have beaten Falmouth twice this season, 4-1 and 6-0.

“This will be like our championship game,” she said. “I’m really excited for it.”

Falmouth has always been strong in girls’ hockey, reaching the state title game in 2012, and the West semifinals last year.

This year’s team began with that 4-1 loss to Scarborough, and then a 6-5 upset loss to Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete.

“That was a shock,” Bazinet said. “Against Cape, it was like we were expecting to do better.

“We never again underestimate a team. The next time we played Cape (an 8-2 win), it was one of our best games.”

The Yachstmen re-grouped after that Cape loss and have gone 14-3 since, with losses to Greely (in overtime), Lewiston and Scarborough.

Falmouth Coach Rob Carrier said Bazinet and co-captain Lucy Meyer “help get the team focused … they are great assets to the coaching staff.”

Bazinet loves to talk about her passion for hockey.

When looking at colleges, she wanted to make sure they had a club team. She already has been accepted to four schools, but she is still waiting on her top choice, the University of Delaware, which features club hockey and a program in fashion marketing.

“I just have these two sides to me, the hockey side and the fashion side,” Bazinet said. “When I got older I asked for a mannequin for Christmas. I just love it.”

Athletically, Bazinet tried figure skating “and I was awful. All I could do was skate fast.”

Her younger brother Evan (a junior on the Falmouth boys’ team) began playing hockey, so she and sister Jayde (a Falmouth graduate last year) took up the game.

Alyse Bazinet was soon on travel teams. One of her teammates was Devan Kane, now the Scarborough goalie.

“I used to be the one protecting her, but it’s fun to play against her,” Bazinet said.

Bazinet and sophomore Martina St. Angelo make up a formidable pair of defensemen.

At forward, Meyer has been a leader, along with freshman Evie Clement.

Freshman goalie Ally Hurdman “has been outstanding,” according to Carrier. “Always working hard.”

Working hard will be a must Wednesday, as the Yachtsmen try to keep a fun-loving season alive.
