CLEMSON, S.C. — Chris Okey hit a two-run double during a three-run first inning and Daniel Gossett struck out seven over seven strong innings to lead Clemson to a 5-2 win Friday over Maine in the opener of their three-game weekend baseball series.

Maine got one run back in the sixth when Sam Balzano scored on a groundout by Brian Doran.

The Black Bears (1-3) cut the deficit to 5-2 in the eighth on an RBI single by Doran that scored Balzano. Maine had the bases loaded following Doran’s single, but Steven Adam grounded into a double play to end the threat.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

MAINE 4, CONNECTICUT 1: Brooklyn Langlois and Kristin Gilmour each had a goal and an assist for the Black Bears (6-19-5, 4-13-3 Hockey East) as they scored three first-period goals to pull away from the host Huskies (9-22-2, 6-13-1).

Missy Denk and Brianne Kilgour each added a goal and Meghann Treacy made 31 saves.

AMHERST 3, BOWDOIN 1: Chelsea MacNeil scored the lone goal for Bowdoin (10-10-3, 5-7-3 NESCAC) in a loss to the Lord Jeffs (13-5-5) at Brunswick.

Amherst’s Emily Flom broke a 1-1 tie early in the third period.

HAMILTON 2, COLBY 1: Naomi Woolfenden scored to give the Continentals (8-13-2, 2-11-2 NESCAC) a two-goal lead with 5:13 left in the third period, and they held on to edge the Mules (8-13-2, 4-10-1) in Waterville.

Colby’s Delaney Flynn scored on assists from Jess Barkley and Katie Tang with 1:33 left.

UNE 2, BUFFALO STATE 2: Shannon Smith and Marissa Clifford-Biederman scored for the Nor’easters (8-11-5), but Melissa Ash got the tying goal midway through the third period for the host Bengals (3-19-2).

SOUTHERN MAINE CC 89, UM-AUGUSTA 71: Jose Nouchanthavong finished with 25 points, six steals and four assists to pace the Seawolves (21-8) against the Moose (6-22) in the quarterfinals of the Yankee Small College Conference tournament at South Portland.

Tong Akot added 18 points and eight rebounds.

MEN’S HOCKEY

COLBY 4, TUFTS 1: Ben Chwick had two goals and two assists, including a successful penalty shot, to lead the Mules (11-9-3, 8-8-1 NESCAC) over the Jumbos (3-19-1, 1-18-1) at Medford, Mass.

Sam Parker had 28 saves in the win.

BOWDOIN 5, CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 1: Kendall Culberson scored twice and the Polar Bears (14-7-2, 9-7-1 NESCAC) got two goals in a 13-second span in the second period to pull away from the host Camels (8-13-2, 7-9-1).
