Sens. Angus King and Susan Collins will soon vote on whether to make public a report on the CIA’s use of “enhanced interrogation techniques” – torture.

This report, approved by the Senate Intelligence Committee, contains information the American people have a right to know. The report indicates that high CIA officials:

Ordered the illegal use of torture.

Found loopholes to make torture legal.

Lied to Congress about the effectiveness of torture.

This information should certainly be part of a national discussion on how to make the use of torture go away and never come back.

How low our country has sunk! We tore down the Iron Curtain and lost our souls. Now we are unrecognizable from our former foes.

Do we come from the same stock as the heroes who fought against tyranny in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and World Wars I and II? We’ve become the very tyrants our forefathers fought against. Have we left no sense of pride, of decency?

The CIA’s own internal documents prove that torture is ineffective. But beyond that, the use of torture is beneath us. Torture – government-sanctioned sadism – is an evil that has no place in our traditions and our heritage.

Sens. King and Collins need to hear from us on this issue.

Sen. Susan Collins can be reached at 202-224-2523.

Sen. Angus King can be reached at 202-224-5344.
