An 11-year-old Sanford boy will face a juvenile charge after allegedly phoning in a fake robbery report.

Police received a call of a robbery in which a victim had been assaulted at Burger King at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, according to Deputy Chief Tim Strout.

Police and rescue workers responded but found there had been no robbery.

The call was traced and the child who made the call identified, he said.

The boy was taken with his parents to the police station, where he was interviewed. He will be charged with the juvenile equivalent of filing a false report, Strout said.

Police are treating the incident seriously, in part because false reports tie up emergency responders who might be needed elsewhere, he said.
