Faster than it will take them to reach the first mile marker Aug. 2, 4,000 runners registered Friday for the Beach to Beacon 10K road race.

The window for general registration opened at 7 a.m. and closed 4 minutes, 32 seconds later. The popular road race filled in 4:58 last year.

A lottery for 1,900 remaining entries is open until March 23. For a $5 fee, runners can take a chance at winning a bib (and paying another $45 to register) at beach2beacon.org.

Groups of up to six people can enter the lottery together under a single team name. If one gets in, all get in.

On Thursday morning, residents of Cape Elizabeth snatched up 600 available slots in 6:38.

Friday’s quickest entrant completed the registration process in 52 seconds.
