A column in the March 30 edition of the Maine Sunday Telegram, “Wells High School Indian mascot a sign of disrespect,” has proven to be highly offensive.

This school should not be penalized and publicly called out on a simple caricature.

It is outrageous that the character of the school is being based upon that when the graduation rate of the school is 99 percent.

Some of the other schools mentioned that have chosen to change their caricatures do not have as high a success rate.

The teachers at Wells High School are some of the best and have done an incredible job at preparing students for college and other careers.

Frankly, your paper printing this article was completely disrespectful in itself, and you should be ashamed for having it published in such a distasteful way.

Outraged and disheartened citizen,
