Two views of the riverfront site of the former Maine Energy Recovery Co., or MERC, in downtown Biddeford. The older photo, showing the garbage incinerator while it was still in operation, was taken in 2007; the newer photo of the cleared site was taken on Thursday, April 3, 2014.

The city of Biddeford is currently taking steps toward redeveloping the 8.5-acre riverfront property. City officials are releasing a request for proposals for a market and feasibility study and accepting letters of interest from prospective developers. Read Gillian Graham’s April 7, 2014 report for more details on this effort.
