Norovirus hits cruise ship, afflicts more than 100

More than 100 passengers have contracted the highly contagious norovirus on a ship that is touring the California coast. But the cruise line said Thursday it has no plans to end the weeklong voyage early.

Some 104 passengers and 25 crew members on the Crown Princess had been infected by the cruise’s fifth day, but fewer than 15 were still complaining of the gastrointestinal symptoms that come with the virus, Princess Cruises spokeswoman Karen Candy said.

Fifty people have been quarantined in their cabins because they could still be contagious..

Kissing congressman resists calls for his resignation

Embattled Louisiana Rep. Vance McAllister issued a less-than-ironclad vow to stay in office Thursday as the state’s Republican governor and party chairman demanded his resignation after a videotape showed him in a lingering kiss with the wife of a friend.

Gov. Bobby Jindal called the congressman’s behavior an embarrassment. “Congressman McAllister says he wants privacy to work on his issues with his family. The best way to get privacy and work on putting his family back together is to resign from Congress,” Jindal said.

Earlier, accusing McAllister of “extreme hypocrisy,” party chairman Roger Villere said in a brutally blunt statement that “a breach of trust of this magnitude can only be rectified by an immediate resignation.”

Suburb to sauce bottler: Stifle the odor, or we will

A small Southern California municipality has turned up the heat on the makers of the wildly popular Sriracha hot sauce, telling them that if they can’t keep their bottling plant from smelling up the neighborhood, the city will.

The Irwindale City Council voted 4-0 Wednesday to tentatively declare Huy Fong’s 2-year-old bottling plant a public nuisance. If a second vote, scheduled for April 23, makes the declaration official, Huy Fong will have 90 days to stop releasing the spicy smells that neighbors say burn their eyes and throats and make them sneeze and cough.
