A Portland man driving on Interstate 95 in Pittsfield heard a loud noise under his car and pulled over to investigate, only discover flames beginning to consume the vehicle.

Godfrey Watchiba, 41, was driving a 1999 Toyota Camry at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. Sgt. Bruce Scott of the Maine State Police said he saw Watchiba’s car with flames shooting out from under it as it traveled.

Watchiba barely had time to grab a couple of personal items before flames engulfed the car. Nobody was injured. The fire was put out by the Pittsfield Fire Department.

Southbound traffic was restricted to one lane for about an hour, police said.
