I read the Maine Voices opinion piece by Douglas Volk, “Rwanda not only survives but flourishes 20 years after genocide” (April 21), with mixed feelings.

Mr. Volk is entitled to his opinion as a tourist, and I do not doubt that he saw good educational and business projects.

However, when I see native Rwandans fleeing their country and coming to the U.S., and hearing some of the stories of those who have come to Portland, I know that not everyone is flourishing.

I would have liked Mr. Volk to pay some attention to the political climate in Rwanda and the de facto dictatorship of Rwandan President Paul Kagame.
