PORTLAND — A Connecticut man has been sentenced to 16 years in federal prison for bringing shipments of illegal drugs to Maine.

Markevin Faucette, of Hartford, Connecticut, was also sentenced in U.S. District Court in Portland on Wednesday to eight years of probation upon release.

Faucette pleaded guilty in October to crack cocaine trafficking charges.

Faucette was in a car with two women when he was arrested while leaving the Maine Turnpike in Auburn in January 2013. Prosecutors say he was responsible for bringing more than 500 grams of crack cocaine to Maine.

The Sun Journal reports that Faucette received an enhanced sentence as a career offender because he had five prior drug-trafficking convictions in Connecticut, Virginia and North Carolina.
