BRENTWOOD, N.H. — About 500 people gathered for a candlelight vigil in honor of fallen New Hampshire Police Officer Stephen Arkell.

He was shot in the line of duty Monday while responding to a domestic disturbance at a home.

People remembered him Tuesday night at the Brentwood Recreation Center as a man devoted to his family and caring of others.

Arkell also was a volunteer assistant coach for his daughters’ lacrosse team at Exeter High School, and was known for his carpentry skills.

Paying tribute from Washington were Sens. Kelly Ayotte and Jeanne Shaheen, who took to the Senate floor to honor Arkell. Ayotte called him an unsung hero who went about his work in a quiet, humble way and touched many lives. Shaheen said his commitment to protecting the community was unparalleled.
