Newick’s Lobster House on Gorham Road in South Portland closed Wednesday.

Steve Newick, who owns the seafood restaurant and two Newick’s Lobster Houses in New Hampshire, said business at the restaurant had been slow for some time.

“It may have seemed sudden, but we have been monitoring the situation for a while and finally had to make a decision,” Newick said.

Business at the restaurants at Dover Point and Concord, New Hampshire, remains strong, he said.

The South Portland restaurant had about 20 employees, Newick said.

The Maine Department of Labor said its Rapid Response team will be available to help employees with unemployment benefits and other state assistance at a meeting scheduled for 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Portland CareerCenter at 185 Lancaster St. in Portland.

The restaurant opened near the Maine Mall in 2010. Before that, a Cap’n Newick’s seafood restaurant operated on Broadway in South Portland for 31 years before closing in 2007.
