WATERVILLE — Maine State Police said Sunday they are investigating the death of 92-year-old Aurele Fecteau as a homicide.
The determination was made following an autopsy Saturday by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, but no other information is being released, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

A family member found Fecteau’s body about noon Friday in his house. Waterville police went to the home on Brooklyn Avenue and called state police for assistance based on what they saw.
Fecteau’s daughter-in-law said he feared he would die as a victim of a violent crime.
“Given my father-in-law’s age, we knew his time was short, but none of us ever expected his life would be cut short in such a horrific way. Never,” Lorraine Fecteau said in an email to the Morning Sentinel.
“It is a shock to all of us even though he feared this type of crime would someday be perpetrated against him,” she added. “Sadly, that fear came to pass. Preying on the elderly is a cowardly act, but my husband and I have full confidence that the efforts and the integrity of those professionals working this case will result in an arrest and justice will be served. Dastardly deeds done in the dark eventually come to light.”
Detectives from the Waterville police and the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit and state crime scene investigators continued to collect evidence at Aurele Fecteau’s modest home in a quiet neighborhood on Sunday, as well as conduct a number of interviews, McCausland said.
The home, at 33 Brooklyn Ave., is near Waterville Senior High School and Mid-Maine Technical Center.
Police are asking for the assistance of anyone who may have been in the area of Brooklyn Avenue and Vose Street in the days leading up to Friday and seen anything out of the ordinary.
