Sanford High School’s Top Students

Gillian Morris
Valedictorian of Sanford High School’s class of 2014, Gillian is the daughter of John and Margaret Morris of Sanford, Maine. A voracious learner, her #1 ranking was the result of a carefully crafted curriculum that featured no CP level courses, and included AP and Honors classes when and wherever possible, along with two college courses. Winner of multiple academic awards including Goodall Scholar Cup, AP Scholar Award, College Board Perfect Attendance, SHS Student of the Month, and Outstanding Achievement and Excellence awards in at least eight classes, Gillian demonstrated a complete commitment to excellence in everything she attempted at Sanford High School. She was also a dedicated member of GEM (Girls Empowerment Movement), Math Team, RSVP, Key Club, National Honor Society, French Club, Drama Club and Slam Poetry Club over which she co-presided. Gillian has also been involved with many out-of-school activities including Girl Scouts (K-12), Theater Camp, Summer of Service, and has also held a number of part-time jobs. Gillian plans to study Biology while attending Colby College.

Marlee Sue Smith
Daughter of Fred and Lisa Smith of Springvale, Marlee achieved the #2 ranking in Sanford High School’s class of 2014, while being a full year younger than her class cohort after skipping the seventh grade! Marlee is a delightful, highly motivated young woman with a heart for helping others. She is extremely bright, and has challenged herself with the most challenging coursework Sanford High School has to offer. She has also put together an impressive record of extracurricular activities, with a strong service ethic emerging as the major theme. An active member of Peer Helpers for the past two years, four-year Student Council member, including serving as secretary her junior year, senior class secretary, Civil Rights team member, senior Secretary for National Honor Society, four-year Key Club member, Math Team, Summer Police Academy, and Maine Youth Action Leadership Alliance highlight a list of activities in which she has been active and effective. She also earned her letter as the Boys’ Track and Field Manager for the past 3 years. She has also won a number of academic awards, and has maintained a part-time job working over 20 hours a week during school at the local Duncan Donuts. Marlee has been accepted into the Pioneers STEM Honors Program at the University of Southern Maine, and plans to study biochemistry in preparation for a career in pediatric dentistry.

Zoe Jade Ross

Daughter of Tamber Burns of Sanford, Maine, Zoe earned the #3 ranking at Sanford High School for the class of 2014. Zoe played on the Softball Team for three years, and was a member of the Environmental Club, Interact Club, and Peer Helpers, while volunteering many hours at a local animal shelter and her church. She also held a part-time job over the past two years. Zoe plans on attending the University of Maine at Machias where she will major in environmental studies.

Benjamin Martin
Son of Greg and Bernadette Martin of Acton, Maine, Ben earned the #4 ranking in Sanford High School’s class of 2014. Ben might be considered a bit of a renaissance man, with academic and career interests in the sciences and mathematics, a personal interest in the musical arts, an accomplished athlete, a strong social justice ethic, and natural leadership abilities. Ben served on the Civil Rights Team all four years at Sanford High School, and served as President during his senior year. He was a member of the Peer Helpers in which he assisted transfer students adjusting to their new environment, and was also a member of Key Club. He also served on Student Council during his senior year, and served as his senior class treasurer. He was a four-year member of the cross country team and track and field team. In addition to working a part-time summer job, Ben spends much of his leisure time playing his piano. Audrie has been an extremely accomplished student over the course of her four years at Sanford High School, and worked hard to distinguish herself academically, finishing with a flourish jumping up into the top-5 in ranking. Possessing a strong service ethic, Audrie was very involved with Key Club for the past three years, and donated many hours of volunteer service to Maine Children’s Cancer program, Alzheimer’s Walk, Waban Projects for people with developmental disabilities, and a number of athletic programs for kids. She also excelled in athletics playing soccer, basketball, track and field and lacrosse. Audrie plans to attend the University of New Hampshire where she will study biochemistry and molecular biology.

Misa Thanh Mai

Daughter of Hung Mai and Truc Nguyen, Misa earned a tie for the #6 ranking in Sanford High School’s class of 2014. An outstanding and highly involved student, Misa was a tireless worker, putting together a transcript of only the most challenging AP and honors courses, and  a highly respected class leader at Sanford High School. Misa developed her leadership skills in a number of extracurricular capacities. Freshman Class President, Sophomore Class President, Junior Student Council Secretary, and Senior Class President head up an impressive extracurricular resume that also includes Leaders Club, Student Council, Key Club, National Honor Society, Math team, and Civil Rights Team, Environmental Club and Peer Helper. She was also named All-academic tennis athlete for three successive years, and named team captain. She caps a marvelous high school career with perfect attendance all four years in high school. She has also maintained a part-time job for the past year. Misa will be attending Clark University in Worcester, and plans to major in biochemistry and molecular biology.

Taylor Pepin
Daughter of Lynn Durost of Sanford, and Dean Pepin of Springvale, Taylor earned a tie for the #6 ranking in Sanford High School’s class of 2014. Taylor was an amazingly consistent academic performer during her four years at Sanford High School, her lowest grade being a 93, while engaging the most rigorous curriculum offered. In addition to being a stand-out student, Taylor was also quite involved in extracurricular activities.  In athletics she was a member of varsity cross country and track and field her junior and senior years. She was a fixture in Key Club during the last three years, serving as senior treasurer; and a two-year member of RSVP, serving as vice president during her junior year. She was also a member of National Honor Society, Math Team, and served on the homecoming committee all four years. Possessor of a strong service ethic, Taylor volunteered well over 200 hours with Strategies for a Stronger Sanford, a local organization that engages the community in effective strategies to support their children, youth and families. In addition, Taylor has held down a part-time job at the local Duncan Donuts over the past couple of years. Taylor plans to attend the University of Maine at Orono where she will study Environmental Engineering.

Castine King
Daughter of James and Kristi King, Castine earned the #8 ranking in Sanford High School’s class of 2014. Naturally well suited to English and the humanities, Castine worked very hard to overcome challenges in advanced math courses to finish strongly as a senior! In addition to being an excellent student, winning multiple Student of the Year awards, as well as multiple student of the semester awards, Castine is quite dynamic in her extracurricular pursuits. She has been heavily involved in after school clubs like Key Club, French Club, RSVP, Art Club, Drama Club, Girls Empowerment Movement, and is serving as President of the Slam Poetry Club during her senior year. More impressively, Castine has volunteered over 100 hours since she was a freshman in a local after school program that teaches core values to at-risk youth. She not only teaches a weekly drama class in this program, but helped organize and develop the program. She spent last summer as a camp counselor, and has also maintained a part-time job at a local pharmacy averaging 15-20 hours a week during the school year. Castine plans on attending Assumption College in Worcester where she will study Writing and Mass Communications.

Joshua Elliot Morgan
Son of John and Melissa Morgan, Josh earned the #9 ranking in Sanford High School’s class of 2014. A strong student, Josh is serious about school and is very curious about the world around him, enjoying learning for its own sake. He commands a large vocabulary both when he speaks and when he writes, a testament to the wealth of knowledge he has accrued in his studies. His high level of attention to detail and his focus on the facts showcase his analytical thinking and scientific mindset. Josh also gained over 700 hours of applied learning in the Residential Wiring program at the Sanford Regional Technical Center. Josh possesses a clear sense of his priorities, and his life goals reflect his strongly held beliefs and values.
