South Portland High School Top Scholars

Emma Kane, Valedictorian – Daughter of Donna & Daniel Kane.
In addition to being at the top of her class, Emma is actively involved in musical theatre, community service and student government.  She participates in French Club, National Honor Society, World Language Honor Society, musical theatre – playing Fiona in this year’s musical, “Shrek”- and student senate, having been Senate President her freshman and sophomore years.  Emma especially enjoys her time volunteering at Brown Elementary School with 4th graders and kindergartners. She has been recognized with many awards, including the Harvard Book Award, the Claire E. Chase Award for Excellence in French, the Charles Kahill Award for Excellence in World History, Dirigo Girls State Award, the John Chapin Award for Advanced Placement American History, AP Scholar with Distinction , the Maine Youth Leadership Award, and the Rotary Youth Leadership Award. Emma enjoys baking, singing, acting and playing piano. She spends her summers working at Portland Discovery.  She plans to attend Bowdoin College as a Biology major.

Emma Jordan, Salutatorian – Daughter of Martha Winn and Troy Jordan.
In addition to devoting time to academics, Emma participates in musical theatre, drama club, poetry club, the yearbook staff and dance classes.  Her hobbies include art, writing, theatre, dance, singing, reading and volunteer work, tutoring a 5th grader.  Emma is a member of National Honor Society, World Language Honor Society, and received the RISD Book Award for excellence in Art, the Yale Book Award, Sophomore and Junior English Awards, the Art 2 Award, the Society of Women Engineers Award, and a Maine Drama Festival Award.  This year, Emma wrote her first novel and made 1,000 paper cranes!  She plans to attend Smith College where she will study to be a writer or major in Neuroscience.

Hannah Kennedy – Daughter of Denise Evans and John Kennedy.
Hannah is active on the yearbook staff, Spanish Club, and the community service group Interact.  Her hobbies include hiking, reading and writing. Hannah received the Wellesley College Book Award and is a member of the World Language Honor Society. In addition to devoting time to academics, Hannah is a dietary aide at Seal Rock Nursing Home.  She plans to study Psychology at Bryant University.

Thomas Leddy – Son of Sharon and Chris Leddy.
In addition to being a top scholar, Thomas has played varsity lacrosse since his freshman year.  He holds the record for single-game goals, scoring nine goals in one game!  He participates in the community service group Interact, National Honor Society, World Language Honor Society, and is actively involved in Guys and Pies, a young men’s group that works on creating healthy relationships and ending violence.  His interests include football, lacrosse, boating/sailing and weightlifting.  Thomas has been recognized with an AP Scholar Award, the Cornell University Book Award, and he played on an SMAA All-Academic football team and an All-Conference lacrosse team.  He teaches Sunday School and works at Shipwreck and Cargo.  Thomas plans to attend Bowdoin College in the fall.

Kimberly Dodd – Daughter of Lolita and Timothy Dodd.
Kim has been active in the community service group Interact, is a member of the marching band, Math Team, Science Bowl Team, KEY Club, Yearbook staff, outdoor track team, and the Spanish Club.  In addition to devoting time to academics, Kim volunteers at Maine Medical Center and enjoys quilting and outdoor activities like snowboarding and wakeboarding.  She has been recognized with the University of Rochester’s Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award and the Smith College Book Award.  Kim is a member of the National Honor Society, and she received the President’s Bronze Service Award for volunteerism. Kim is employed by Hannaford and plans to attend Saint Joseph’s College of Maine to major in Pre-Med/Biology.

Gilead Biggie – Son of Orly and Dennis Biggie.
Gilead is actively involved in the award-winning FIRST Robotics team, the Riot Crew, and has been Pit Crew Captain.  He’s a member of marching band, jazz band, outdoor track and Spanish Club.  He enjoys traveling, running, robots, and coaches the Mahoney Middle School Lego Robotics Team. Gilead was recognized with the Williams College Book Award and the Xerox Award.  In addition to being a top scholar, Gilead is an Intern at D & G Machine and attends religious school at Congregation Bet Ha′am. He plans to attend the University of  Rochester School of Engineering.

Yubin “Ashley” Moon – Daughter of  Jinsook Jung and Jindeuk Moon.
Yubin is an accomplished musician, playing both the piano and the acoustic guitar.  In addition to being a top scholar, she is actively involved in the community service organization Interact, the yearbook staff, the Spanish Club, the Math Team and volunteers at the South Portland Library.  She is a member of the National Honor Society and the World Language Honor Society. Her hobbies and interests include roller blading, movies, Indie Music, reading, traveling and feminism.  Yubin plans to continue her education overseas and teach English in South Korea.

Christopher Feely – Son of Teresita and Michael Feely.
Christopher plays varsity tennis, rec basketball, and coaches his younger brothers 5th/6th grade rec soccer team.  He is actively involved in the community service organization Interact and is a member of the World Language Honor Society.  He is a WWII history buff, enjoys reading, collecting historical artifacts, and current events. Christopher is a Celtics fan and a Green Bay Packers fan.  He plans to major in Economics at Cornell University. Christopher shared that he has been a “master of procrastination since 6th grade!”

Harel Biggie – Son of Orly and Dennis Biggie.
Harel is the Lead Programmer for the award winning FIRST Robotics team.  He is a member of the marching band, jazz band, tennis team, Spanish Club, and enjoys “surveying invasive species.”  In addition to being a Top Scholar, Harel is a Lego Robotics coach at Mahoney Middle School and attends religious classes at Congregation Bet Ha′ am.  He is an intern at Kepware Technologies and has been recognized with the Dartmouth Book Award and an Excellence in Physics Award.  Harel enjoys traveling, computer programming, and web design.  He plans to attend the University of Rochester and is leaning toward a major in Electrical Engineering.

Eunbin “Cindy” Moon – Daughter of Jinsook Jung and Jindeuk Moon.
Eunbin is a member of the National Honor Society, the World Language Honor Society, and she received the Saint Michael’s Book Award.  In addition to being a Top Scholar, she is involved in Math Team, the community service organization Interact, yearbook staff, Spanish Club, and she has played piano since the first grade.  Eunbin enjoys reading, Jazz R & B music, making movies, traveling and dance.  She plans to attend college overseas and wants to be a news anchor.  Eunbin shared that she enjoys “watching beauty guru, Clothesencounters A.K.A. Jenn Im on Youtube!”
