Welcome back, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. As a Vietnam veteran, I would ask that other veterans and the public welcome back this soldier.
War profoundly impacts the soldier, and not always in a manner too frequently portrayed in the movies. We do not all return as the public would like to think: heroes, performing acts of bravery, selfless and unquestioning.
This has been the history of organized violence, and those of us who have participated in or witnessed it have seen the best and worst of human behavior.
Sgt. Bergdahl will have the memories of his experience burden him for the remainder of his life, and I do not think that we should sit in judgment of him.
