A man in his late 60s or early 70s robbed the Bank of Maine branch on Winthrop Street in Hallowell on Monday, police said.

The holdup occurred around 10:15 a.m.

Hallowell Police Chief Eric Nason said the man asked to open an account, then presented a note demanding money.

Nason would not disclose the contents of the note, including details about any threats the man may have made.

Bank staff gave the robber an undisclosed amount of money and he left on foot.

He is about 6 feet tall and estimated to weigh 175 pounds. He was wearing a straw hat, a tan or brown coat, a blue shirt, tan or brown pants and brown shoes, and was carrying a brown briefcase.

Maine State Police and Kennebec County sheriff’s deputies responded to the robbery report.
