SOUTH PORTLAND — A South Portland man took his own life during a standoff at a home on Memory Lane on Monday.

Police were called to the single-family home at 10:44 a.m. for a report of a despondent man armed with a gun.

Police surrounded the house. They heard one gunshot and were unable to make contact with the man inside.

A city Special Reaction Team robot entered the house and confirmed that the man inside was dead at 12:45 p.m.

Police were meeting Monday with family members and did not release the man’s name.
