Wells police closed Route 1 for a short time Monday morning as they investigated a head-on collision that sent two people to the hospital.

The accident was reported around 10:40 a.m. at the intersection of Route 1 and Bourne Avenue. Traffic was detoured around the intersection while it was cleaned up, but was moving again by noon.

Officer Chris Baez said John Osterday, 60, of Wells, was driving his 2006 Chevy Impala north on Route 1 when he hit a Chrysler convertible driven by Sharon Mountain, 63, of Bethlehem, New Hampshire, as she turned left onto Bourne Avenue.

Mountain and Osterday were taken to a local hospital for injuries police believed to be minor.

“The airbags deployed. That’s pretty rough when you’re in an accident,” Baez said.

Baez said the accident remains under investigation, but he does not anticipate charges being filed against either driver.
