SANFORD — Sanford police are investigating the apparent attempted abduction of two 10-year-old girls. The girls were uninjured.

Cpl. Matthew Gagne said an abduction attempt Tuesday evening failed when one of the girls yelled at the man, who then fled.

Police said the girls were walking near the intersection of High and Bates streets around 6:20 p.m. when a black van pulled up alongside them.

The driver exited the vehicle, approached the girls, and grabbed one of the girl’s shirts in an attempt to pull her toward him.

The girls described the man as tall, black and in his 40s, with a bald head and scruffy beard that was slightly gray. He was wearing a green shirt and blue jeans.

Police said the van was black with white rear doors.

Sanford police ask that anyone with information regarding the man or the vehicle contact the detective division at 324-9170.
