PORTLAND – The federal government says two people have placed bids so far on each of two Maine lighthouses that went up for auction this spring.

Halfway Rock Light Station off Harpswell and Boon Island Light Station off York went on sale in May. Two people have bid on Boon Island, driving the price to $12,000. The higher of the two bids on Halfway Rock Light is $31,500.

Bidding on Boon Island closes Aug. 12 but could be extended. Halfway Rock Light’s bidding has no closing date.

Halfway Rock was built in 1871 and features a 76-foot-tall tower on two acres of ledge about 10 miles out. Boon Island was built in 1855 and includes a 133-foot tower on a tiny island about six miles offshore.
