BASEBALL

Brewer scored nine runs in the last two innings to easily pull away in a 14-4 win over Morrill Post in the American Legion state tournament at Husson College in Bangor on Friday.

Morrill Post was led by Adam Helmke, who had a double, and Robert Graff, who had a single and an RBI.

 Patrick Breton scattered eight hits and allowed just one run as Post 51 of Oakland knocked off Pastime of Lewiston 6-2 at Bangor.

Caleb Dostie, Carter Chabot, Alex Small and Matt Poulin each had a pair of hits for Pastime.

 Bangor remained undefeated with a 10-0 shutout of Bessey Motors at Bangor. Trevor DeLaite pitched the entire game allowing only four hits, striking out seven and walking one.

JUNIOR LEGION: Griffin Kelly pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and striking out six in a 4-2 win as South Portland (18-3) defeated Oxford Hills (15-6) in the Junior Legion state tournament at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach.

 Nick Cowperthwaite pitched five innings, allowing only three hits as Bangor Cadets (18-3) handled Wells Post 143 (16-5) for an 8-1 win at The Ballpark.

FCBL: The North Shore Navigators (21-27) took a 5-3 win over the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide (18-29) at Lynn, Massachusetts. Rahiem Cooper was 2 for 3 for the Tide with a run scored.

NECBL: Kendall Patrick went 2 for 4 to pace the Sanford Mainers to a 4-3 win in the first game of a doubleheader sweep over the Valley Blue Sox at Holyoke, Massachusetts. Sanford (24-17) used a first-inning grand slam by Matt Harris to win the nightcap, 7-3.

TWILIGHT LEAGUE: Andrew Richards pitched a complete-game 4-0 shutout as Aero Heating and Ventilating (8-8) defeated Lenders Network (4-13) at Deering Oaks.

GOLF

PGA: Sergio Garcia tied the course record at Firestone by closing with seven straight birdies for a 9-under 61 at Akron, Ohio. The round gave Garcia a three-shot lead over Justin Rose going into the weekend at the Bridgestone Invitational.

 Nick Watney increased his lead to three points over Geoff Ogilvy in the Barracuda Championship at Reno, Nevada.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Marco Dawson shot a 9-under 63 to take the lead in the 3M Championship at Blaine, Minnesota.

BASKETBALL

NBA: San Antonio signed Tony Parker to a multi-year contract. Parker averaged 16.7 points and 5.7 assists in 29 minutes per game last season to help the Spurs to the franchise’s fifth NBA title.
