This photograph, from the Jan. 25, 1940, edition of the Portland Evening Express, shows the art deco exterior of the Puritan Tea Room at 566 Congress St. The same storefront is now a dining room for Otto Pizza – the chrome and neon are gone, but the distinctive curved windows are still there.
The Portland Room of the Portland Public Library is in the process of organizing and conserving the archival collection of original Portland Press Herald, Maine Sunday Telegram and Evening Express photographic negatives — a major collection that spans from 1937 to 2005.
