I am writing this because a recent experience touched my heart.

I was driving through Deering Oaks at the light at Park Avenue. There was a man standing there with a German shepherd. Crossing the street were two children about 7 or 8 years old.

One child had $2 in her hand and went up to the man to give him one of her dollar bills. The man said, “No, thank you. Just buy yourself something.” I saw two acts of kindness.

I was heading to South Portland, but after that I went back and the man was still there. I had a few dollars and told him what I had seen.

He thanked me and said, “I’m not doing this for the money. I want to work.” If anyone is looking to hire someone, go to the corner of State Street and Park Avenue.

That gesture made my day, and I feel the story should be told.
