OAKLAND, Calif. — Los Angeles Angels pitcher Garrett Richards underwent surgery on Friday to repair the torn patellar tendon in his left knee.

Richards tweeted a picture of himself on a hospital bed before the surgery, then used social media to announce that the procedure was finished.

“I’m out. Surgery went great! Thank you everyone for your support and positive vibes. I will get through this,” Richards posted on his Twitter account.

Richards was 13-4 with a 2.61 ERA this year before getting hurt Wednesday while covering first base during the Angels’ 8-3 win over the Boston Red Sox. He is on crutches and may rejoin the club next week in Anaheim.

Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said that Richards’ surgery “went as expected.” He added that the timetable for Richards’ recovery remains six to nine months.

ORIOLES: Any Orioles postseason run this year will be without third baseman Manny Machado.

Machado, currently on the disabled list with what the team diagnosed as a right knee sprain, will have season-ending surgery on the knee, according to an industry source.

The 22-year-old Machado injured his right knee on Aug. 12 when he fell to the ground following through on a swing.

This would be the second consecutive year that Machado’s season ends due to a knee injury.

INDIANS: Catcher Yan Gomes has been diagnosed with a concussion and there’s no timetable for when he’ll return to the lineup.

Roberto Perez has replaced Gomes.

YANKEES: New York will retire Joe Torre’s No. 6 and unveil a Monument Park plaque to honor their former manager before Saturday’s game against the White Sox.

REDS: During a visit to Cincinnati for the opening of an urban youth academy, outgoing MLB Commissioner Bud Selig declined to talk about Pete Rose’s chances for reinstatement to baseball.
